I'll have made changes to my map document that I don't want to save. Perhaps I was doing "what if" scenarios, or playing around with things and didn't like it. If I go to the File menu or the Open command and I open the same document I'm in, ArcMap does nothing. What I need to do instead, like fraxinus mentions, is click File > New, OK, and click No when asked to save changes. Then I go to Open and pick the map document I had opened seconds before. What fraxinus (and I now) are asking is that there be one command in the file menu to undo all changes, or reload the map document from disk. Of course ArcMap should ask if we want to discard our changes or something, but if we click Yes, then our map document would open up as we had last saved it.
