ArcGIS 10.1 Direct Connection to RDBMS with old SDE version

  • We have a Oracle DB which contains spatial data but also a SDE instance (9.2). The SDE instance does nto manage this data but is required for another piece of software.
SDE 9.2 is not supported in 10.1 (which is fine) but you cannot connect using a default db connector. It automatically recognises the useless SDE and tries that.
There is no current way to manipultae/copy/hack a SDE connection file to get around this.
We need an option to choose whether the SDE connection attempts to use either a direct connection or SDE.

In v10.0 you could connect to the database by both SDE and direct connection (Query Layer).
ESRI will nto accept this as a bug even though there has been a reduction in functionality due to a software change (the Connection WIzard)

We had a similar issue trying to connect to a multi-geodatabse structure and was successful building the direct connect using the toolbox instead.

Go to ArcToolbox>Data Management Tools>Workspace>Create ArcSDE Connection File
Don't be fooled by the name, it actually gives you the ability to set the additional connection parameters (like 9x, 10.0)  missing in the default wizard of 10.1.

Give it a look.
