Batch Update Item Descriptions when necessary

  • When you go to a layer's item description, there are things available for editing such as Summary, Description, Title, and Tags.  In many cases you may want to use the exact same values for those items that are similar but on multiple different layers. It would be nice if there was a way to do a top down inheritance of those items that are in the same gdb.

For example, you download the Local Government Information Model.lpk and start loading your data into it. Your boss wants you to do some editing on the metadata OR you want to package all of the layers (for purposes of exporting the schema along with a symbology).  You may need to put something in the description for each and every layer about adapting your data to the LGIM model.

Wouldn't it be AWESOME if you could do that only once for the GDB while all of the individual layers inherit the same description (values)?

IT would be very helpful to be able to choose which items in the metadata you're adding to -- i.e. I want to add to description, keywords, and contacts, but not constraints. Also, it would be useful to indicate if what I'm adding will replace what's already in the metadata or if it will be appending what's there.

I wanted to add that you are REQUIRED to edit these things when exporting your map as an MPK.  In my industry, I do ALOT of testing with different schemas, data models, maps, etc, etc. On occasion it is necessary to do something  'quick & dirty" as they say and it would be really nice if I wasn't FORCED to do this. Additionally, there were no handcuffs on the process at 10.0...this is new at 10.1.

However, I am handcuffed, so let's move forward, shall we.

Someone from ESRI recently suggested that I try Xray for ArcMap as a possible solution to my idea submitted above. You can read about it here:  http://blogs.esri.com/esri/arcgis/2010/10/07/x-raying-your-arcmap-documents/  Link to add-in:  http://www.arcgis.com/home/search.html?q=x-ray%20for%20ArcMap&t=content

I watched the video for a little demo.  So far so good.  Remember I'm looking for a way that I can apply layer properties to various different data.  As I'm trying to figure this out, I click the help button on the toolbar and it redirects me to a pdf.  It literally says:
"To learn how to use the tools, simply open a map document in ArcMap and try the buttons in the toolbar. "

I hope they're not high-fiving over that!!  I don't see a method to create the mpk's similar to the templates that ESRI distributes from ArcGIS Online.   I realize they put the handcuffs on for that but shouldn't that be when you have to jump through hoops?

Seriously, can I just get a tool to batch edit the prop's or require less items to be necessary?  Perhaps you simply include a checkbox that says, Export without description.
