Scale Dependent Rendering support in MSD

  • In ArcGIS 10.0 when MXD was possible to publish as map service by ArcGIS Server, scale dependent rendering was possible to use. With 10.1 release only MSD are possible to publish with ArcGIS Server and with this big change ability to use Scale Dependent Rendering has gone. The only workaround is to split each layer into duplicates and apply scale visibility. This is very time consuming to modify MXDs in such way and it causes other troubles as well, for example:
If a WMS service has duplicate layers then GetCapability file contains all these duplicate layers and this has impact to using the WMS service. For example if you need make a GetMap request in some specific scale (defined by BBOX, WIDTH and HEIGHT parameters) then you have to specify all layers which are visible in this scale. If layers are not specified correctly then the result map image can be blank. Another example could be if the WMS service with duplicate layers is added to a WMS desktop client then users will see a lot of duplicate layers and it could be really confusing for them.
