Resource SDE Raster Dataset to Mosaic Dataset in Python

  • To All ArcGIS Users:

I have many layers in thousands of mxds where the raster data is sourced from SDE.  ESRI representatives recommend sourcing this data from Mosaic Datasets instead of SDE to get better performance.  After I have created a Mosaic Dataset to replace the SDE raster dataset, I would like to automate the resourcing of data from SDE to the Mosaic Dataset, especially since my organization will be retiring this specific SDE database.  I have tried the replaceDataSource method in python, but it does not appear to support this type of data conversion.

As such, my idea would be for ESRI to supplement the existing replaceDataSource in python to include this type of data transfer or create a method in python designed specifically to convert SDE raster datasets to Mosaic Datasets.

Instead of using replaceDataSource what if you authored a layer from a Mosaic Dataset, by adding the Mosaic Dataset to a map document and saving it as a layer file. Then use UpdateLayer to replace the raster dataset layers with your mosaic dataset layer:
