Offer ArcGIS for Home at ArcEditor (Standard) license level--not just ArcView (Basic)

  • Thanks for offering ArcView at USD $100 per year for noncommercial uses. The overview states: "This offer is ideal for existing ArcGIS users who want to use the same powerful software at home for noncommercial personal use and for individuals who want to expand their GIS skills."

    http://www.esri.com/arcgis-for-home/index.html

However, ArcView may be insufficient for educational home use. For example, unless I'm misremembering, ArcSDE Desktop / Personal is only available at ArcEditor and higher. By only providing only ArcView, the opportunity for self-study (or get a refresh on) ArcSDE technology is lost.

The U.S. has of course seen layoffs recently. A friend who recently lost her job asked what she could do to keep up with her skills. She's an intermediate to advanced GIS Analyst so ArcView wouldn't cut it. So I can't recommend ArcGIS for Home for her situation. Most GIS folks who've been in the profession for a while are using ArcEditor or ArcInfo. I suppose she could request a trial of ArcEditor?

To sum up, thanks for introducing ArcGIS for Home. To fully unlock the value in this concept, offer the ArcEditor license level (AKA "Standard" at 10.1). Charge double if you like. But please try to make it happen.

That or reconsider what's truly in or out of scope for this offering. Does it really meet the (non)business need it was designed for? ArcView may actually limit those who want "to expand their GIS skills." Consider someone with only ArcView at work, but wants to learn ArcEditor or ArcInfo. Another option might be to offer non-commercial use subscriptions to ArcEditor via Citrix (or some other form of virtualization). Finally, don't forget GIS folks wanting to learn ArcGIS Server (web services). How about ArcGIS for Server @ Home for those wanting to advance their knowledge in that domain? Think outside the polygon here.

ArcGIS Desktop Advanced Version 10.1 is now available for the ArcGIS for Home Use Program:

Ideas staff, could we please have an update here?

The pre-conf Q&A for the 2012 Int'l UC states the following:

"Q: I would like to use full ArcGIS at home; can Esri include this as part of its home use program?
Yes. Esri is modifying its home use program to include ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced."

Why is this Idea then not flagged as Under Consideration? Was there, or will there be soon, a UC Reveal about ArcGIS for Home? Will it be on-cycle with 10.1 SP1? Or off-cycle? etc.

Apropos of that, here's something to consider generally:

Update Idea statuses more frequently; esp. when publicly declaring something to be Under Consideration

I'm trying to learn ESRI products on my own following the tutorials. Many of them have given me valuable insight into how I might use the software in my role as a geotechnical consultant. However many of them I cannot complete due to this issue - and on top of that it takes a lot of effort to figure out why a step in a tutorial won't run because the error messaging is ...incomplete?.... at best. The software is so powerful that a combination of ArcEditor to really have access to its functionality and better messaging would be an incredible boost to the learning curve.

A colleague mentioned to me recently that ArcGIS Desktop isn't even included with EDN subscriptions. Is this still true if it ever was? If so, how does it make sense for a developer to have access to only part of the whole Esri technology stack? Would it not be better to take a page from Microsoft's MSDN and provide developers with everything they need to be successful?

Crosslinking to a new, related idea I created recently. This would dovetail nicely with a reimagined ArcGIS for Home Use Program that includes ArcEditor / ArcGIS Standard (10.1). Proliferation of knowledge about geospatial technology (and all attendant good it could do) could be expedited with increased educational access to the tools. Call me ridiculous--I've likely been called worse--but this seems fully compatible and consonant with Esri's mission:

Offer ArcGIS Server for Home / ArcSDE for Home educational-use programs

I could not agree more with your point about Oracle.  I took their 5 day SQL class and am now using that 1400 page book to prep for my SQL Expert exam, BUT since they provide a FREE 11g DB and SQL Developer, it's made the studying process so much more exciting and 'real world' (at least as close as possible).  Furthermore, my organization was about to drop Oracle altogether because they had no one that was proficient with Oracle, now that will be changing = preserved market share! vs. lost customer.  Sounds like a win-win to me!
Good posting

Thanks everyone.

@BruceLang, thanks. Would what you're suggesting be thought too difficult for Esri to administer? It's a good great idea. But could be rejected out of hand due to the logistics of managing permutations of extension combinations. Easier for them to stay the course. But it would be nice to better tailor the product to the needs of real customers. Difficulty of administration shouldn't necessarily rule out the implementation you suggest. Hopefully someone from Esri will comment. It's certainly a tweak worth considering.

A colleague, when hearing about ArcGIS for Home, suggested it should be included at no additional cost for anyone covered under an Esri Enterprise License Agreement (ELA). I agree. So I added the following idea for people to vet and vote on:

Include ArcGIS for Home with Esri Enterprise License Agreements (ELAs)

I really do love the idea of ArcGIS for Home and applaud it. A great start. But I think it could provide better value in its next iteration.

ArcGIS for Home is an EXCELLENT idea from ESRI.  However, limiting this to the ArcView (Basic) level is the exact reason I've NOT participated in the program.  I use ArcEditor (Standard) at work, so the limitations are too much.

Please keep the price at $100/year with extensions - PLUS options to:
  • Replace an extension with another.  I would not use "ArcGIS Schematics" but would like "Maplex"
  • Choose up to two standard extensions for no additional cost.

This is a great idea - thanks for posting it. I know I would prefer ArcEditor at home. I'd like to learn some programming that is outside the scope of what I do at work.

Incidentally, the ArcGIS Desktop 60 day free trial media given out at the 2011 International User Conference were at the ArcEditor license level (soon to be "Standard" at 10.1) and not ArcView ("Basic" at 10.1).
