  • Chart renderer improvements for ArcMap

-In the legend, show the values corresponding to the minimum and maximum pie size, as well as customizable middle value, which defaults to the median or average of the values.  This allows you to better estimate the attribute value for each symbol.  This borrows from the MapInfo Professional pie chart thematic maps.

-Allow the legend symbols to be displayed horizontally or vertically

    Horizontal pie legend

-Similar to the percent and LOG normalization options, add a Square Root normalization option.  The middle sized pie chart value in legend gives the user a feeling of these pie sizes are scaled.  Square root is helpful because the value of each pie can is directly proportional to the radius (area = pi r squared).

-Add options related to having pies show up when you have various fields with null attribute values, e.g. substitute with 0 in rendering logic.  There are scenarios, e.g. selecting LOG normalization, where you should see pies at locations where nothing is drawn just because other location attributes are null.

-For bar charts, show/set this middle value as well so you can see how they are relatively sized.

This functionality is vital. Without it, the legend does not provide enough information, and is therefore not useable.

This is 100% necessary in ArcGIS. The current legend labels are insufficient and not clear enough!!!
Get this in there!!!

I asked about this at the 2012 UC.  They said to post on this site...I see it's already here.  My guess is the chart symbol tools are so poorly implemented that noone is using them!

Besides the above comments, I would like to see:

- Fix the bug where all symbol customizations are lost every time you re-open the properties window
- Add user control over the symbol size in the legend, so you can get round numbers
- Make the default symbol outline width 0.4 instead of 1
- Eliminate overlap of legend symbol and label (see image)
Bad legend-Pie chart label overlaps symbol

It's incredibly important.

I'm looking at doing a weekly map that received weekly refreshed data with pie charts.  A smart label renderer on a 2D pie chart would be most helpful.  With the renderer smartly determining if the label of each pie slice could fit inside the pie or if it has to be outside the pie.

A related issue is if the pie slice is so small it doesn't show in the symbol but the label is still desired.  As aside, it would be helpful if there was an override so if the slice is too small and doesn't appear automically that the override would display it artificially.

Thanks
Brian

Absolutely agree. The single pie with number in the legend tells the reader nothing.

Oh NO! I had just accidentally demoted this - however, I think this is incredibly important and should get programmed. I'm so sorry!

Quite essential. where are the voters?

we urgently need this enhancement. where are ERSI developers?

extremely important!

thank you

regards

Jamal
