More modeling tools: integrate R into ArcToolbox

  • R Statistical Software (http://www.r-project.org/) is almost certainly the most widely used statistical program by scientists and researchers. We know that ESRI is willing and able to integrate open-source software into ArcGIS (Python, duh).

What is really needed is a simple, behind-the-scenes conversion of proprietary ESRI data models (e.g. shapefiles, GRIDs) into R spatial objects. The "sp" package in R is the main spatial data package, but numerous others could be used to add functionality and analytic capabilities by starting and R session in the ArcGIS GUI and executing R functions on data in the TOC, for example.

Correct.

I attended Mark Janikas's excellent presentation at the last UC and have used the "Using R in ArcGIS" tools. The tools appear to be a side-project for Mark, and not functionality fully supported or explored by ESRI. In addition, Mark's tools actually just create an R script and excecute it by calling to the OS instead of utilizing the rpy/rpy2 Python packages because of some compatiblity/bug issues. With the advent of arcpy, I would think ESRI could increase the statistical capabilities of ArcGIS exponentially by simply harnessing existing statistical software.
