Legend Scalebar/North Arrow

  • 190

  • It would be nice to place a scale bar or north arrow (or both) to the bottom of the legend frame. That way when you add or remove legend items, the scale bar or north arrow would shift and always visible in the legend frame. Ideally, this idea should be expanded to include coordinate system info, company logos, any user driven text. etc.

This can be managed by your anchor point settings on the individually grouped items.  For example, I have my legend items set to a bottom left anchor point so that, any time they re-size, the bottom left corner stays in place and the other corners are adjusted out/in to meet the size needs.  In your case, you could probably just lock two anchor points next to eachother.  For example, if you wanted the North Arrow to be directly below the legend and them both to be left aligned, you could set the bottom left anchor for the legend and the top left anchor for the north arrow.  Or, at least that method's worked for me so far.  I don't know if this is actually what you're wanting, because it still doesn't allow good options for stacking and nesting items, but, it's a work around for at least part of the problem you're having I think.  Hope it helps.

I thought grouping the items together would do the trick, but no.  Grouped items, like a north arrow below a legend, hold their pre-grouped position - in my opinion, this it the way it should be.

However, expanding the group setting with alignment options could be very handy.  For example, group (attach) item A to the bottom of item B.
