Training Credit

  • I'd like to see ESRI offer organizations who are entitled to "free" UC seats (but can't use them) the option of using them instead to attend other types of training. This could include the paid online courses, paid ESRI instructor-led training held locally, etc.
The most equitable way might be to do it hour-for hour, so 1 seat at the UC (which is something like 45 hours of training) would entitle the user to 45 hours of some other kind of (usually paid) training for free.

I Strongly support this idea. Even if 1 seat at the UC would entitle the user to less hours of some other kind of training for free. Now in organizations, usually managers who are in charge of GIS can go to  conferences. However, new ideas and applications of ESRI usually are promoted by GIS professionals who need to keep the technological edges current.

Perhaps I'm being completely random here. But it's interesting to note that our state Enterprise License Agreement includes a certain number of complimentary registartions to the International User Conference in San Diego. But my employer had to pay for me to go to the DevSummit. I leave it as an exercise to the reader for why this may be so and how it might impact any potential implementation of your Training Credit idea.

All I can say is this: more transparency in how these things are accomplished or negotiated is a good thing. Something right out of the SalesForce.com playbook. Salesforce.com created the Ideas module ideas.arcgis.com runs on. Benioff has some disruptive-but-healthy ideas about large enterprise software companies and their relationships with customers. A good read:

Esri might also consider creating lower-priced CBT training modules. Then offer these in trade for UC seats. Vote here if you agree:

Offer low priced, self-paced CBTs that mirror the offerings and full content of Instructor Led Training classes (ILT)

Great idea. Many complimentary conference registrations go unused I suspect.

Esri could also follow Oracle's lead and publish its instructor led training manuals for free in PDF format as in the following idea:

I agree, especially considering that the training classes to teach us how to use software we've been using for 10 years but has been upgraded and is completely different costs $1300.
