Graphics Element Manager

  • I would love to see a graphic element manager similar to the Object Manager in Corel X4.  This manager would be a list of all the graphic elements created by the Drawing toolbar in an ArcGIS layout.  They would be far easier to manage if you could have the ability to toggle viewability, printability, editability, to group objects graphically.

    Corel Object Manager

This manager would be particularly useful when a graphic element you have created is changed to white and gets lost in the background, or is hard to select due to being covered by another graphic element.  Guides could also be controlled from this manager and be defined numerically rather than graphically (i.e. a guide placed at exactly 0.314", rather than an approximation placed by mouse).

    Thank you for your support.

This is an important capability that is sorely lacking.
The Corel object manager is an excelent model for this (much better than the minimally useful Illustrator implementation).
As things stand, there is simply no real control over graphics and other elements on the page.
If something like this has already been implemented in Production Mapping, then it shouldn't be too hard to get into ArcMap.

Sadly, I have no access to the very expensive PM tools.  :(

If you have access to Production Mapping, check out the Layout window.  This window lists all the elements in the map, including graphic elements and allows you to perform various operations like selecting and grouping.

It could also allow you better control over the draw order of graphic elements.  Now we only have the Order->Bring Forward/Send Back commands, which are difficult to work with if you have a lot of elements.

In fact, I don't see why the manager couldn't give access to all the objects within the GraphicsContainer, including map frames and map surround objects. I've considered trying to implement something like this in the past, but the programming effort required isn't really covered by my job description. I have often needed to track down a graphic object that somehow ended up fourteen feet off the printable area of the page, or have needed to change the properties of some element that was covered by another, or have wanted to do multiple selections on objects that were difficult to select directly in the graphic area of the screen. Even without adding new functionality to the objects, it would be valuable to have this alternate way of accessing their existing properties.
