Make ArcMap an effective WFS Client

  • Build an effective client interface for WFS services in ArcMap. Instead of using the interoperability tools to download the entire WFS and convert it to featureclasses, make ArcMap compose bounding-box-based GetFeature requests to the WFS server, then recieve and render only that returned data. It basically works this way for WMS already, so let's see it work for WFS too.

I agree totally, include WFS2.0 functionality as well.

It's pretty rubbish that this has not been implemented at 10.1.  I've got a client that currently uses ArcGIS Desktop (ArcView). I want to deploy a WFS to them for their project data for easy delivery/easy updating.

I'll recommend they should go for QGIS as a WFS client.

This is needed in ArcGIS Engine as well.

At 9.3 ESRI made changes to the wfs.db file so that the bounding box was always the full extent of the data and not the active view. This wreaks havoc when WFS service are limited to 2000 records. ESRI Australia provided a fix which can be downloaded from the Landgate SLIP site https://www2.landgate.wa.gov.au/slip/servlet/portal/serve/Library/SLIP/home/issues_bbhotfix.html.

If the link doesn't work then simply insert this into your existing wfs.db file:
WFS|Web Feature Service (WFS)|URL|INPUT|INPUT|YES|NONE|VECTOR|YES|YES|NO|YES

But for a leading edge GIS company, ESRI sure don't handle WFS and WMS very well at all!!

Cache features as they are acquired. Have to figure out what happens when view frame includes all features in service.
