Define Classes for Symbology

  • Merged
  • Add a way to define symbology using SQL queries to select the classes it applies to, in the same way that you can define classes of features and label them differently. "Unique values, many fields" is too coarse in many cases.

This could go under Features in the symbology tab as "Classify features" or similar

Definitly.  I currently need to symbolyse a feature class with both color and a pie chart.  I currently bring in two copies of the same dataset and symbolize each differently, but the dataset is so big that it really slows down ArcMap (I also label the features).
Tools similar to the ones for the Labels would be very handy: Classes, SQL Queries, Scale depedency (ie. remore Pie Charts when zoomed out)...

I would be happy using "Unique values, many fields" if I had more control over the symbology and the labels oter than manual changes. I have a map legend that lists political districts. The symbology is by party and the labeling is district number and politician last name (1 - Doe).

"Unique values, many fields" works, but I have to manually select the records to color as democrats and than again those that are Republican. Then, in the label column, I delete the exterraneous part of the label that designates political party for each record. Doable, but not fun. It would be nice to inform ArcGIS that all records where paty value is democrat be symbolized with one color and republicans as another color.

This functionality in available in the PLTS extension (ESRI Production Mapping @ 10).  The specific tool that allows you to do this is called Visual Specifications and allows you to apply both standard and representation symbology to features classes/layers. We use it to batch apply our symbology and can build queries using an expression or SQL statements.
