The ability to have multiple layouts in ArcMap Desktop has been needed for a long time.  It is very inefficient to have to create multiple .mxds formatted for various paper sizes/layouts wen the map data is static.  We have the funtionality for multiple data frames in the data view, yet we need this funtionality within the layout view.

Moving multiple categories (up and down) at a time,

I’m not sure if there is a chance to be able to move MULTIPLE categories (up and down) at a time

    Thank you

    1. A couple versions ago we were given the ability to import and work with MS Excel files.  I've always needed to be able to EXPORT a table directly TO an Excel (.xls) file, without have to find a 3rd party app to do it.  (Still not in version 10's Table Options>Export command>Save as type options dropdown.)  Currently, we can export to a text (.txt/.dbf) file then import it to Excel; too many steps.  ESRI can this functionality be added soon???

    2. And why is "File Geodatabase" in the dropdown list twice?

    3. Also, the export should default to the previous "Save as type" last selected?  Not to the never used .dbf file type!!!

I would like to see the Google basemaps integrated  into the ArcMap suite of products similar to Bing. It would be nice to have Google maps as an option as a basemap for ArcGIS Online and to easily load it into my desktop applications.

I have been told by some of the ESRI Staff that the Google coloring scheme does not make for a good basemap.  I find that most people are actually more familiar and comfortable using a Google map. One of the reasons I do not use the other map options, if I can help it, is because I want my users to already know what they are looking at and not have to guess "Is that a highway or a freeway?"

Each of the major mapping sites such as Google, Bing, Open Street Map and ArcGIS have their strengths. They all seem to update their data at different rates for different areas. One site may update the imagery this year and not do it again for two or three more years. Meanwhile other sites may have updated more recently. It would be nice to have Google as another option if they have better data. I know ArcGIS has a community basemap program out there so that I can upload tiles to enhance the basemap for an area but that takes time that I don't have.

In all I just want to have Google maps be another option as a basemap for my desktop and web applications

The ability to display hatches and hatch labeling from a PolyLine M shapefile or geodatabase feature is not supported in web mapping services.  This is a standard linear referencing function ins ArcGIS desktop but does not transfer to a published map service.

Hatch labeling is widely used by many industries; seismic lines, well paths and pipeline in Petroleum and transportation.  I would like for this function to be added to map services.

Here is an example of the error message.

    Route Hatch Error

Conversely, could a listing of all desktop software functions that do not transfer to web mapping be made available?

After creating a feature class, it would be convenient to go back after data input, and make changes to the field ordering (position).

Significant improvements are needed in the field of Legend Element creation and management to be more interactive and flexible, to allow for faster and more effective workflow. No wizards or cumbersome dialog boxes necessary. This idea makes use of functionality proposed by Visually Interactive User Interface.

Interactive Legend Management directly in the Layout VIew

    Fast and easy Legend creation:
    • Drag and Drop selected layers from TOC directly to the Layout.
    • Context menu in TOC: Add to Legend/Remove from Legend options.
    • Legend context menu: Add/Remove Item.
    Flexible Legend management and formatting:
    • Resizing Legend Element horizontally and vertically distributes Legend Items into columns and wraps legend text, especially labels into multiple rows.
    • More different shapes of Legend’s frame (not only rectangle). Wrap Legend’s contents around graphics in the Layout. Change vertical content’s alignment.
    • Threading Legend Elements – allow contents to flow between connected Legends in different parts of the Layout. Possibility to rotate Legend Element.
    • Edit Legend’s spacing with possibility to parametrically define each size directly in the Layout.
    • Change Appearance and Arrangement of all Items directly in Legend’s context menu.
    • Access map connection settings directly through Legend context menu. Possibility to define custom reference scale.
    • Insert special-purpose formatting objects: Line, Heading, Space, Column Break, etc.
    • Introduce overall Legend Style, which would define Legend properties and formatting including: items format, spacing between legend’s parts, title format, etc.
    • Legend context menu exampleLegend context menu

Interactive Legend Items manipulation, formatting and display:
    • Reorder, move or copy legend’s items directly in the Layout by drag & drop inside single Legend Element or between different Legends.
    • Possibility to replace items by drag &drop while preserving item’s formatting and settings.
    • Insert Placeholder or Proxy to temporarily take the place of currently unavailable layer.
    • Access Legend Items directly from the Layout. Apply style or custom formatting, patch shape and size to item parts, multiple items selected or the whole legend. Possibility for each item to have custom background.
    • Control display of: Item, Name, Heading, Label, Description, Patch for selected/all items.
    • Legend Item context menu example:Legend Item context menu

    Provide serious Undo functionality.

It would be nice, if the headlines of grouped layers would be visible in the automaticly inserted legends in the layouts of my maps. Is is not very comfortable to convert them to graphics an insert the headlines manually every time I change the content or symbology of a map.

GeoPDF formatted data represents a large and growing source of information. The US Geological Survey is creating all new US Topo products in GeoPDF format and the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency is releasing scanned map products in GeoPDF format.

It would be a great help if ArcMap would be able to display these GeoPDF products ... at least as a background map ... if not exploit their content further.

It would be great to replica the relationships on client map mobile cache, so that we can query the related information.

After creating a feature class, it would be convenient to modify the number of characters for a field without having to create a new field with the desired length and copy the data over.

Of all of the checks the Analyze map function performs in 10.1 it allows duplicate column alias names to exist for a feature layer. Please do not allow a map service to be published when a feature layer contains duplicate column alias values especially the OBJECTID. This should be caught in the analyze map workflow.

Imagine the number of issues that could occur with this symptom? A feature class does not allow this so why should a map service?

Would like to see the ability to save .mxd's and .lyr files into a geodatabase (sde/pgdb/fgdb), flat file structures seems so out of place in this cloud world in which we will be living.

It would be really nice to be able to return the 'File Size' and 'Date Modified' properties of a feature class through the arcpy.describe function. This would be really helpful in helping to ensure that users are current with their datasets.

    something like:
    import arcpy

    # Create a Describe object from the feature class
    #
    desc = arcpy.Describe("C:/data/arch.dgn/Point")

    # Print some feature class properties
    #
    print "File Size: " + desc.fileSize
    print "Date Modified : " + desc.dateModified
    print "Read/Write: " + desc.permissions

Using the MakeFeatureLayer and SearchCursor to create a list of features for acting on individual features in a feature class is cumbersome.

The current Listing methods arcpy only support classes of data (workspaces, feature classes, raster...).  These methods should be extended to include lists of the actual data (features, rows, field values).

The following iteration methods, available only to ModelBuilder users, should have a complimentary method in arcpy for use in Python scripts.
    • Iterate Feature Selection:  Iterates over features in a feature class.
    • Iterate Row Selection:  Iterates over rows in a table.
    • Iterate Field Values:  Iterates over each value in a field.
    • Iterate Multivalue:  Iterates over a list of values.

It would be very useful if the ArcGIS Server logging tools were extended to provide more comprehensive information on the traffic, availability, and performance for individual services (OGC and ESRI GeoServices REST.)  Specifically, my clients are interested in "Google Analytics" type of reports on the # visits, # hits by location, new vs. returning visitors, projection/CRS utilized, popular tiles accessed, etc.  This type of information would be useful in planning and justifying costs for extending our systems architecture.
