New Windows 8 based tablet devices have integrated GPS chips.  Those chips distribute location information via the new Windows Location API and not through a COM port.  I'd like to see an option added to ArcPad/Mobile that will allow them to use this as the location source.  (This is for full Windows 8 not RT)

We are working on a large, multi-year project collecting field data using iPad and the ArcGIS App.  The iPad combined with the ArcGIS App give us a great tool with capabilities we would not have available to us otherwise.

Some background on the project. This is a 20+ year Capital Improvement Program with an overall budget of $4.7 Billion.  Our part will likely run 3-5 years, with us managing the data collection effort. This year alone we will be collecting data on approximately 35,000 private properties including between 12 and 30 individual features, each feature with multiple data entered and one to two photographs.  All of this data is being transmitted to the server over cell phone connections.  There are 20 engineering firms collecting data, at times we have as many as 70 people collecting and sending data to the server.

We are running into two issues with the App:

    1.  Cell phone coverage is limited in certain areas.  A verison of the app that would allow disconnected editing would be very helpful.

    2.  The iPad takes very good pictures.  Too good.  The file size of the pictures is large (2 mb) this is causing photo to be lost in cyberspace and the photos that make it to the server take up excessive room.  If we had control of the resolution of the camera while taking pictures we could limit the file size.  The settings on the iPad do not offer the available of changing the resolution.

Thank you and Please let me know if we can be of any assistance in testing these or other new features.

Working for a civil engineering firm I think it would be great if CityEngine could be used as a way of modeling underground infrastructure, such as: sewer networks and water distribution.

CityEngine looks to be an awesome visualization tool with great detail.  Having the ability to pull in attribute data from GIS utilities and have it displayed in such a rich environment I think would provide a great way for municipalities and private companies alike to 'see' their infrastructure and how it is related in 3D space.

Some of the key fields I can think of to start with in building a working model would be:
    • StructureID - unique ID of structure
    • Rim Elevation - elevation at top of structure
    • Structure Depth - depth of structure
    • Invert Elevation - elevation at bottom of structure
    • Structure Diameter - diameter of structure
    • Structure Material - material of structure (ex: concrete, brick, block, wood, etc...)
    • Pipe Diameter - diameter of pipe
    • Pipe Material - material of pipe
    • Upstream Pipe Elevation - elevation at upstream end of pipe
    • Downstream Pipe Elevation - elevation at downstream end of pipe
    • PipeID - unique ID of pipe
    • Surface - import from TIN, DEM, contours, etc...
These are just some of my quick thoughts on the subject, but I think having the ability to visualize an underground network in such a detailed and rich environment like CityEngine would be something that is unlike anything out there right now.

Working in the subsurface requires constant acknowledgement of the world as 3D.  Most analytical capabilities in Arc apply to 2D and work well in that plane.  It would be great to have more analysis options for the subsurface.  First on my list would be creating minimum bounding geometry multipatches on point clouds (3D convex hulls and bounding boxes).  In general multipatch creation and editing needs to be made easier in ArcMap and ArcScene.

    Copy / Paste Attributes

The copy and paste attributes feature is great, but when you’re attempting to maintain unique IDs in a GIS, users can easily override existing IDs using copy and paste attributes (within the attribute editor window). It would be nice if fields set to read-only were omitted from the copy and paste attributes.

Is there a way to run an update query (or something like it) in ArcMap like in Microsoft Access?
When we used personal Geodatabases i was able to update data using Access's update query.
Now that we are using the SDE environment I have to copy/export the feature class to a personal Geodatabase, open it in Access, then run an update query between the two tables, then erase the old feature class from the SDE, import the updated data into the SDE, and then finally redo the permissions.
This can be tedious and time consuming especially since everyone has to be out of the SDE database to delete the feature class.

We currently use Bently WaterGems which is ok, but it would be nice if ArcGIS could do the same thing.
In WaterGems we are restricted to 2500 water mains or less.  so we tend to only use 6" and bigger mains.
There are other programs out there that do more but ArcGIS I think would be a better platform.

If you have had event data collected along a linear route against the digitized direction of your line it will be displayed in a reverse order when you run the create route events tool. It would be nice if there was a suite of tools added to the linear referencing tools designed for editing the underlying event table used to make your route event layer. To correct this particular problem mentioned above you could flip the event data so that it now reflects how the data is in the real world along your linear feature.

To illustrate my point see the attached diagram. Let's say you have a road that is 100 m long and the road crew reports an event @ 5m, 40m, and 75m. The crew collected the data against the digitize direction of your road so you need a way to reverse your values. It would be nice if there was a way to quickly get the values such as a Flip Events Tool. This tool will recalculate the values so that in this case they would now be @ 95m, 60m, and 25m in the event data table. Now the events will show up properly where they should be.

Editors find this tool useful when there is a radius provided for a curve but a lack of other pertinent COGO information (i.e. chord length, delta, etc.). This issue occurs when creating a parcel with a curved corner. Typically survey plats contain a radius for the corner but no other information. It also helps when scanned or digitized features have a square corner where the plat designates a curved corner. Older tax plats also have missing curve information. This tool would benefit editors referencing documents missing the required curve data, cleaning up old or inaccurate data, or converting densified arcs to two point curves.Fillet Tool on the Advanced Editing Toolbar in ArcMap 10.1

It would really be amazing if it were possible to access this function through a stand alone python script.  The reason being is that as we update our Sewer and Stormwater datasets, I would like to also automate the tracing of the network in a way that I can then access the linear features (mains and laterals) so I can total their already calculated velocity times so that we can have the most up to date information for flow times from all possible entry points.
Whether it's a limitation with the trace tool or the select data tool, making this possible would really help.

Create a TIN from Lidar data
Create a TIN from survey data (x-sections on ditches, canal, etc)
Merge survey data TIN into Lidar TIN and create new TIN

    or

Create a terrain model from Lidar data
Create a terrain model from survey data
Merge survey terrain model into lidar terrain model

The current process is las to multipoint, multipart to single part, create a tin domain of survey data, select by location and intersect the source layer feature (tin domain),  start editing and delete the points in the table that were intersected, recreate the terrain model to include the survey data shape file with the lidar data (single parts).

I would really considering moving from ArcPad to ArcGIS Mobile if it provided a way to connect to a VRS System. I live and work in Ohio, connecting to our VRS System is free of charge. The only reason I cannot move from ArcPad to ArcGIS Mobile is because I cannot achieve 4 inch accuracy in ArcGIS Mobile like I can with ArcPad and GPSCorrect. If ArcGIS Mobile was able to provide this functionality then I could see many people moving to ArcGIS Mobile mainly because we could synchronize with our ArcGIS Server and ArcSDE database from within the field. While I know ArcPad provides a similar interface the install/uninstall is clunky at best and I personally do not feel comfortable loading the ArcPad Extension for AGS on my production server because of the way the ArcPad team handles updates. So my business need is to achieve 4 inch accuracy, if I can sync those edits from within the field that would be even better. Even using ArcPad and GPSCorrect I can still synchronize my edits in a multi-user editing environment because when connected to a VRS they recommend that you do not post process any further because you are already receiving corrections on the fly from the VRS. So even if ESRI cannot build a interface to connect to a VRS it would still be nice if you could use GPSCorrect from within ArcGIS Mobile to make the connection to the VRS with the understanding that there is really no need to post process once the data is captured and synchronized with SDE given that the TSIP interface is proprietary to Trimble. So either find a way to build an interface to connect to VRS or support the use of GPSCorrect with ArcGIS Mobile is the only ways I can think of accomplishing this task.

A tool that allows you to calculate the net elevation gain/loss of a z-polyline. It would sum all the ups and downs along a path.  It would report: Over the line's x distance, x elevation was gained and x elevation was lost.  or something like that. Maybe with starting z, ending z, min z, max z, etc.

    thanks!

As a small business manager, we don't have the budget to buy anything more than ArcView.
    So here is my idea.

Perhaps it would be wise to implement a "Pay As Needed" license for ArcEditor or ArcInfo...or Extensions for that matter. Sure, you wouldn't get that ma$$ive check from your users....but I think you would promote the Jack Dangermond idea that GIS should be for everyone (not just those with the big wallets)!

So here is what I am thinking...

I have the need to build a new Geometric Network file 3 to 4 times a year tops.  This requires me to have the ArcEditor license, which is way out of my price range....For that amount of money; you will likely never have my business. Plus, how do I justify spending that much money for something I use maybe 10 hours a year total?

However, if there were a way where I could "Pay As Needed" to use a ArcEditor or ArcInfo license for a few hours, or for the day, I would sign up.  (Given that the pricing is reasonable). This approach would only work if you really consider the price in which a small business could afford to use the software.

I could just simply login with my ESRI account, and pay for a License by the hour or by the day.  The same principal would be great for extensions too!

This approach would allow the smaller guys to have just as much of a competitive advantage with ESRI software as the big guys with big wallets.

I would like to see a tool where I could proportion a span of pipe.
For example a span of pipe is 100 feet and I would like to proportion it into 4 spans of 25 foot pipe.
Then I could use a tool to create a connection to the nearest vertice.

This way as I am drawing my as-builts if I know that a connection is being made to a span of pipe I could proportion the line as need and automatically insert a manhole for instance.

My thought is to build a cogo tool for water/waste water editing.

In the landbase world you can cogo a parcel's demensions. In this case I am think about cogo where you could proportion the line and based on a break point insert a specific feature like manhole or fitting. The proportioning of the line would be based on the direction of flow on the line, therefore at the beginning of the process you would choose to proportion from the start of end point of a line.

Thank you ESRI for creating Geodatabase Attachments in v10!  Its great to easily connect and access pictures, videos and .pdf construction drawings and much more at their geographic locations!

However, in its current format adding file attachments to features is only functional for a very small organization, it is viable for hundreds not thousands of attachments.  Many thrid party companies are popping up to fill this much needed niche.  I would appreciate it if ESRI would consider making some improvements to enable larger organizations to utilize adding file attachments as a means to spatially organizing files and documents.

This is a follow up on this forum discussion:  http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/51099-Attaching-files-to-features-Linking-to-multiple-documents

    Proposed Geodatabase Attachment enhancements:

    1) Why relocate/re-save the file attachment in a geodatabase?

We should be able to click on a feature and open an attached document (.wmv, .jpeg, Word, .pdf, excel, etc.) without having to relocate and save the file to a Geodatabase.  Why create a copy of a document and save it in a geodatabase where accessibility is restricted to ArcGIS?

In its current design, each time an attachment is added to a feature a copy of the file attachment is saved in a geodatabase.  This means that if 50 utility features were all constructed with the same construction plans, the geodatabase must contain 50 copies of the same document.  Why do we need to create/add a new copy of a document for each feature it is attached to?

Typically an organization already has a filing system in place, in some cases files are stored on a secure server.  It is important to attach a document to a feature class from its current server folder location.  This prevents maintaining data at multiple locations (1) geodatabase and (2) original secure location.    This would allow a “living” document to be updated and accessed by non-GIS users.  Currently, to update a document you are required to delete and re-add the document for each feature connected to the newly revised attachment.

    2) Query which features are attached to which file attachment.

Currently if a document needs to be updated there is no way to know how many features are attached to copies of the document in the geodatabase or how many copies the geodatabase contains. Create an interface which allows the user to view which features are attached to which document.

    3) After hours of attaching documents you can delete them all in one click.

The attachment table/relationship is very easy to create, just a right click in ArcCatalog and tada! However, they are also very easy to delete, just a right click in ArcCatalog and tada, potentially thousands (or tens or thousands) of attachments are gone without so much as a warning popping up…  Perhaps we could at least have an ArcCatalog warning pop up to make sure that the user is certain they want to delete the attachment relationship?

It would be nice to be able to select junctions by the number of connected edges. So that I can select all junctions that have 3 edges connected to them. It would be great if this could be implemented into the normal select by location tool, however I imagine that this would require a topology or a geometric network in order to work. In which case I imagine that it would need a specialized dialog box.

The Utility Network Analyst toolbar provides many options for working with networks, including tracing and selecting features based on user-inputted criteria. In hydrologic applications (i.e. working with rivers), many loops exist in the network making such traces difficult, particularly when choosing to "Find Path." Currently, this option only selects one side of a loop, leaving what may be desired unselected.

In order to successfully implement network tracing on looped networks, such loops have historically needed to be broken artificially with various nodes (i.e. control points) moved to one side of the loop (thus rendering the network nonrepresentative of reality--a flawed model). This workaround may work in some instances, but its forced nature often requires the use of multiple networks/feature classes, particularly when a model of reality is desired alongside the now-forced, manipulated network.

It is recommended that the Utility Network Analyst be evaluated with looped networks in consideration. In particular, please consider models of the real world (e.g. hydrologic networks) and the desire to work with only one network by not having to break and manipulate flowlines.

When any edge is deleted from network, associated system junctions will remain undeleted in the network. Those system junctions accumulates in the geodatabase which can cause significant growth especially in large networks. There is a sample solving this task at edndoc site (http://edndoc.esri.com/arcobjects/8.3/samples/editing/working%20with%20network%20features/delete%20junctions%20with%20edge/deletejunction.htm). It would be nice to have this implemented directly as standard part of the system, e.g. like an option for users to choose whether to delete junctions or not.
