ArcGIS for some time now has issues with how it deals with transparent objects.  If particular symbols are currently used and are made transparent, ArcGIS struggles and deal with them when printing but also if trying to export the view to a tiff image.  Doing the same process however in Photoshop works.  I understand a tiff file contains no transparency but you should be able to embed a transparent symbol/object on to an exisiting raster.  In Photoshop I can load a base raster layer and create new transparent layers or symbols and export this back out to a tiff with no issue.  If I try this using ArcGIS, ArcGIS appears to get confused and either the printing routine becomes very time consuming or it is impossible to export the current view to a tiff.  I believe it is treating the transparent symbol as a transparent band rather than processing the object/symbol seperately and embedding it to the new image.  I think with a little bit of research looking at Photoshops ability in this area  ESRI should hopefully improve a somewhat frustrating area within ArcGIS.  I have managed to do this by exporting the view to a png and then converting back to a tiff but I beleive I should not have to do this.

Please can you allow people to upload items of type 'image' (png/jpg) to ArcGIS Online.

We have created a number of webmaps which use images for both feature service symbology and info window image content.  It is always troublesome for us to figure out where we are going to store these images and make sure that we maintain them at the same URL for the lifetime of the webmap.
Ideally we would like to be able to upload images to ArcGIS Online and just link to them within the webmap.
That would mean that all the content in the webmap is then stored in ArcGIS Online and not dependant on external URLs that may or may not be the same for the life of the webmap.

Alternatively, can you store the image data in the webmap item itself.  Image data is already able to be stored in the webmap feature layer definition when using the default symbols as shown below.  Please can you allow storing of uploaded images in the same way.

I love that users have the ability to configure their own popup windows when creating a map in ArcGIS Online without having to get into any code, and that there are a few options for them to start from (list, description, custom, none).  However, I feel like this is only the beginning.  When there are many attributes for a given layer, it would be great to be able to organize them across a tabbed window, instead of being forced to use a custom scrollable panel.  This way, one tab could contain a free-form description, another tab could contain a list of selected attributes, another with an image (either from a feature attachment from from a URL from that attributes) and maybe even another with a list of related links.  The 'custom' option will let you do most of this, but the scrollable panel is not as good for organizing a lot of data as a tabbed popup would be.

Something like this (http://www.masscec.com/index.cfm/cdid/12451) would be nice, and I'm sure you can do better than Google on this.

The advantage of using tiled maps is because of speed, but it is only useful when underlying data doesn't change too much.  At present, most customers must re-render their tile-set when they know something substantial has changed.

Esri should invent a TiledMap service mechanism that does the following :

    1. give the existing tile(s) to the client, (asap)
    2. the server re-renders the given tiles and compares the 2 bitmaps (look motion detection algo btw 2 bmp)
    3. if there is a change,  overwrite the new tile
    4. next time anyone accesses that tile, he/she gets the updated version.

You could improve this by checking the last modified time of the map tile.

it only re-renders the tiles that are often used, at a specific zoom level.

Why not let users create a list of favorite workspace paths in ArcCatalog pane to save time searching for frequently-used places?

As an administrator, when viewing users in My Organization, I have the option to view/manage the users'  "items".  It would be nice to see a count of items assigned/owned by a user on the view members page.  Therefore if the current count for a user is still zero or hasn't changed since the last time I viewed, I don't waste clicks.

A last revision date for a user would be nice too, but would probably clog up the screen too much.

I would like to be able to add a drop shadow to graphic elements such as lines, circles, ellipses, callouts, etc much the same way you can do it in other graphics programs such as Photoshop. The drop shadow lets the graphic element "float" above the underlying map. At the moment, I have to export the map as a  jpg or tif , then import the image into Photoshop map to be able to add text labels that require a drop shadow effect.

From what I understand, if I want to have features in a map service that are both editable and also have labels for those features I need to have a whole separate map service for labels alone in addition to the feature service.  I always try to be a proponent of keeping things simple (when possible and if it makes sense), so it would be nice if ESRI could simply allow labeling with a feature service so I don't need to have a whole separate set of map services to allow labeling for every feature service that I want to label.

Perhaps there is a technical limitation or good reason for this limitation, but if so I haven't been made aware of it or been able to find it.

When exporting layers with transparency to Illustrator, it would be handy to be able to maintain the vector layers with their transparency levels, instead of having them rasterized in the export process.

ArcReader is a nice tool but it would be convenient for printing purposes if a feature could be highlighted, similar to selection.  For example ArcReader could be used for public access terminals where people want to print maps with a feature of interest highlighted.

I would like to see a tool developed whereby a user could have a file with fields for fill name and RGB values that could be imported directly into a style, either users own personal style or a entirely new stand-alone style. This would save having to manually create unique fill symbology and streamline cartographic processes.

Manitoba and Saskatchewan both use Internal Angles when working with their parcel fabric data. Currently, it is not possible to use Internal Angles in construction mode, so they use the AngleBacksight Add-In, which converts the Internal Angle measurements they enter in the Parcel Details window to Bearings and Distances. The Internal Angle information is then lost and there is no way to display the Internal Angles as labels on the map.

Please provide the ability to display Internal Angles as labels on a map, either through the use of an add-in or as part of the core software.

    Thanks.

The current rendering of anti-aliased dynamic services differs in the REST API and in the server side Web ADF.
REST API makes rendered anti-aliased edge pixels more contrasting and brighter than the server side of Web ADF.
The result of this is that  the maps in applications based on the REST API (JavaScript, Flex Silverlight) look bad when a dynamic service is dark color (black) lines (roads) and the background basemap in a tiled service has the same lines in bright color. The illusion of an unwanted offset of layers appears.
The solution is simple - the REST API should render an image of a dynamic service map exactly the same as the server side of the Web ADF.

I really like the Anti-aliasing capability in Map Services.  Can you please create a similar simple toggle button for use in within ArcMap?

When making cache tiles, allow several options for text anti-aliasing as there is in Photoshop (sharp, crisp, strong, smooth).
Today, ESRI using SHARP text anti-aliasing , so as you can see the example.
In some cases the CRISP look better and more readable (Google maps used also), so you should give the user the option what kind of text anti-aliasing is to use the display of text

Antialiasing for map output (and on screen display) has been implemented in software for many years. Why is it that the feature is *still* not part of ArcGIS Desktop? ArcServer finally has it so why has it not been brought over to Desktop?

I propose a toggle switch in the ArcGIS Desktop software that allows users to turn AA on for both Layout and Data view (along with an options page for selecting how strong of AA you want to use). Incorporating it into map output is also strongly encouraged for exporting jpgs and tiffs of maps.

There was a wonderful tool for ArcMap 9.3.1 (a script by a user) that would convert map annotation to geodatabase annotation. This will not work in ArcMap 10. It would be nice to be able to have that functionality again. The old script is located at http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=13622

Extend map element propoerties to include the ability to hyperlink the element. Map elements generally contain some type of metadata information or broad information such as a company or organizational logo. It would be great to be able to provide linkable map elements so the consumer of the map product can quickly navigate to the originators web site or link to more specific information.
