Raster properties can be accessed through python using arcpy.Raster(); however, there is no property for accessing the pyramid information.

There should be a way to access the number of levels, resampling method, and storage size.

I use many company logos for my various clients and to avoid having a white block-out on inserted logos it would be great to be able to use the image transparency without having to take it into Photoshop to insert my company or client logo or to change the color of the background to match my layout.  Even when inserting a transparent PNG it still comes in with a white block-out.

In Reference to [NIM072906 ArcMap does not respect WMS background transparency when the WMS layer is initially added to the map.]

This is a function of MapServer code.  Currently as I see it, the WMS in ARC Map 10 is not repsecting OGC requirements.  ARC 10 is reading the input Image format as either JPEG or PNG.  If v10 is reason the JPEG background Transparency color option is not avialable it is greyed out.

If PNG is the input format, then Background color transparency is not greyed out.

In my opinon this should not be read by the software.  The user should be able to turn ON or turn OFF this functionality.  For most MapScript writers there are two color reserved for background space and no data values.

    255 255 255

    0 0 0

It seems the ESRI Dev team is making this decision for the user.  Rather than having an option to determine background color and respected Transparency.    I believe this to be a problem related to Arc10 being more compatible with ArcGIS Server rather than following MapServer OGC requirements.

This option was used and respected in 9.3 regardless of the Image Input Type.
This option should be returned so the user can make the decison on background and color transparency rather than the software making the decision.

This enhancement would display geotagged photos on a map. Currently, it is possible to add an image as a map symbol, but this must be done symbol by symbol. The proposed enhancement would provide a database-driven solution, where the images (or thumbnails) would be displayed on the map, similar to Fotomaps (shown below) or Panoramio.

We need to be fully compliant with LAS 1.4 with all point record formats since many vendors provide their lidar data with all of the point record formats available in LAS version 1.4. Full waveform support is not required at this time (although I don't think anyone would object), but full access to the data in LAS version 1.4, e.g., full range of class codes and record formats, would benefit the community of users of lidar data and ArcGIS's LAS Dataset.

Currently, from the ArcGIS resource center:

"ArcGIS supports LAS versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3. The waveform information that is available when using LAS version 1.3 is not supported. Additionally, LAS version 1.4 files that are 1.3 compliant, containing point record formats 0 through 5, are supported. LAS version 1.4 files containing point record formats 6 through 10 are not supported. "

Add a new Split Method "Polygon Feature Class". to the Split Raster tool.

This currently can be done via Model Builder by executing a series of clip functions using the polygon feature classes as the clipping extents.

It would be ideal to be able to use the Split Tool once while using an input polygon feature class for creating the tiles (or a workspace referencing a series of separate feature classes).

    To All ArcGIS Users:

I have many layers in thousands of mxds where the raster data is sourced from SDE.  ESRI representatives recommend sourcing this data from Mosaic Datasets instead of SDE to get better performance.  After I have created a Mosaic Dataset to replace the SDE raster dataset, I would like to automate the resourcing of data from SDE to the Mosaic Dataset, especially since my organization will be retiring this specific SDE database.  I have tried the replaceDataSource method in python, but it does not appear to support this type of data conversion.

As such, my idea would be for ESRI to supplement the existing replaceDataSource in python to include this type of data transfer or create a method in python designed specifically to convert SDE raster datasets to Mosaic Datasets.

Create a 3D Editor with similar functionality to sketchup but made by esri.  Similar capabilities but support true 3D.

My Idea is for the creation of a tool which directly deals with making digital elevation models from contours. I myself have run into a lot of problems with the topo to raster feature and have had trouble converting my contours to points and then interpolating that way. It would be nice to just have a robust tool which deals with specifically this issue and addresses the shortcomings of the topo to raster tool (including speed).

in case of shape files, the symboles can be moved up and downs.
but in case of raster, there is no feature to do that!!!!!!!! why????

I would like to see the export to Mr Sid.  We used the export feature to create small Mr Sid files for project areas, and I think we will continue to use it.

ArcGIS supports LAS datasets for lidar.  There is a growing volume of gpr data for underground/subsurface imaging that should be supported at some level in ArcGIS, including the Image Extension for Server.  There are parallels in supporting seismic data for geophysical exploration work.  GPR and seismic data are multidimensional in nature and complex.  The ArcGIS platform would be a nice fit for display and basic analysis and processing.

When in a session of ArcMap with the data frame projection set to Web Mercator any measuring gives grossly inaccurate results. This situation is exacerbated by the fact in 10.1 that the data frame is automatically and transparently set to the Web Mercator projection when adding basemap from ESRI hosted services. I have already been in situations where I have reported inaccurate information to a client because I was unaware that the projection of my dataframe was changed.

To rectify this I would suggest 1 of 2 alternatives:
Gray out the measure tools when the projection is set to a distorted projection. This would not address the fields in a geodatabase being updated with inaccurate measurements. A workaround may be to not have the fields update when in this projection.

A better solution would be to allow the ArcGIS interface allow for specifying 2 separate projections, one for display and one for distance and area calculations.

Add the ability to create 3d grids and visualize these voxels with isovolumes and isosurfaces for thing such as chemical concentrations, fluid mechanics, and atmospheric visualization.  Analysis tools such as determining the volume of a partiular isovolume should also be provided such as the cubic feet of soil above 5 parts per billion.   See examples from www.avs.com (AVS/Express) or www.ctech.com (EVS).

The ESRI color ramp "Full Bright Spectrum" has a limited number of colors for distribution as standard.

I would hope to see future versions of ArcGIS 10x and above make a color bar ramps that incorporate the full 256 color spectrum as part of the standard ESRI Style File. I have attached screen captures to illustrate the point.

One of the main benefits in having a full 256 color spectrum (histogram equalization) will help illustrate the subtle anomalies or variances within the gridded data.

With more data detail becoming available to the geologist or geographer using the data, a better analysis and QC can be performed.

Even though custom color ramps can be designed by the individual ArcGIS user and Style Files can be imported that possess advanced color ramps, it is this additional step that can be avoided if a full 256 color ramp were made part of the standard ArcGIS product suite.

The screen capture examples utilizes the Geosoft.style File which already contain a full 256 color shaded spectrum.

ESRI could simply adopt their colors as standard for all GIS users at whatever license level (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo) in the next version.

At the moment there is simply no excuse why the Topo to Raster tool used for creating a DEM is still limited to creating a DEM no greater than roughly 6500 by 6500 pixels! The memory resources are there so we should be able to use it.

The current method of getting around this problem (to mosaic DEM tiles together) creates problems in the resultant DEM let alone the amount of unnecessary time it takes to get this sort of result!

Just like editing feature classes it would be nice to be able to edit raster values in a raster dataset.  This would come in handy for modeling/modifying the earth’s surface and for classifying land use type.  Landuse often changes and with high resolution imagery commercially available one could streamline the process by simply updating their landuse raster rather than redoing the whole classification.  Editing elevation values would be helpful for a number of reasons. One example is calculating volume of land needing to be removed for a construction site. This typically requires a ‘before’ and ‘after’ surface for input, but ArcGIS has no easy tools for calculating the ‘after’ surface to be used as input.  The editing environment should support  multiband edits too.

I need to be able to turn custom overlay grids into graphics for many reasons, but mainly so I can finely adjust the label placements.  The measured grids etc. already have this capability but I need it for the custom ones also!  Please push this up the chain!!

We would like to take high-resolution orthophotogaphy in the field and use it as a background layer in Arcpad, however the image size necessitates clipping it into pieces so that the handheld can manage to display it.  Using an image catalog where only the images relevant to the view extent are drawn could be a way to conserve RAM and not have to switch or resample images.

This idea, Image catalog support for ArcPad, has been logged as CQ00126072. The idea is under consideration by the ArcPad team and can be tracked through ESRI Customer Care Portal located at the following url: https://customers.esri.com/index.cfm?event=login.show.
