    Increase display speed

    Under Consideration

Improve overall display performance for all layers in the dataframe by default (not just basemap layers). Make ArcGIS Desktop rendering engine fast enough to compete with Google Earth or even better!

Idea: global render settings (option or slider) to choose between draft quality (low quality display/fast performance for working purposes) and production quality (high quality display/slow performance for finalization and publishing).

As pointed out in many discussions, like "ArcGIS 10 — Polygon Centroid Options and Appropriateness (FeatureToPoint, Labels, etc)" (http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/28083/arcgis-10-polygon-centroid-options-and-appropriateness-featuretopoint-label) or "How does ArcGIS calculate the “inside” point for “Feature to Point”" (http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/11200/how-does-arcgis-calculate-the-inside-point-for-feature-to-point), advanced users need more precision on centroid definitions and algorithms implemented in ArcGIS.

In details, SHAPE@TRUECENTROID geometry token seems to be equivalent to Feature To Point (Data Management) (http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//00170000003m000000) for single feature. Similary, seems to be equivalent (or use) the IArea.Centroid Property (http://help.arcgis.com/en/sdk/10.0/arcobjects_net/componenthelp/index.html#//002m0000009p000000).
However, Feature To Point is inconsistent with Mean Center (Spatial Statistics) (http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//005p00000018000000) for a FeatureClass.

Clarification is needed, maybe based on quite recent compilation works like:
    • Duccio Rocchini and Chiara Cateni , 2006. On The Measure of Spatial Centroid in Geography. Asian Journal of Information Technology, 5: 729-731.
      URL: http://medwelljournals.com/abstract/?doi=ajit.2006.729.731
    • RE Deakin, SC Bird, RI Grenfell, 2002. The Centroid? Where would you like it to be be?. Cartography Volume 31, Issue 2, 2002.
Using consistent name of the method and citation to the papers could easily be included in ArcGIS documentation, giving users the ability to write their own centroid function in case of disagrement with ArcGIS's one.

It is common practice for custom arcmap extensions to persist information in the mxd via IPersistVariant.

While IMapDocument provides a way to open up an mxd and retrieve maps and layers, it does not provide a way to access persisted extension data.  I think this could be done by adding an interface to the MapDocument class that has interfaces to:
    • enumerate extensions in the document
    • load an extension, hydrating it with the persisted data
    • save/update a hydrated extension to the mxd
    • remove a persisted extension from the mxd

I would like to load and save data to an mxd for a particular extension using only an ArcEngine license.

This would make it easier to migrate ArcMap extensions to ArcGIS server SOE's.  When an mxd is published as a mapservice, the mxd is embedded within the service definition, and can be opened by an SOE using MapDocument, found relative to IMapServerInit.Filepath. The SOE could then use the same data used by the Arcmap extension.

Find a bug, get a credit for future maintenance or training or conference dues. If a bug has already been reported but not fixed in a reasonable amount of time (90 days?) then there should be some kind of payment to users who are affected.

This would lead to more users reporting bugs they find to ESRI and maybe give ESRI an incentive to look for these bug before each new release.

I am sure others out there have had issue with this one. When working with a shapefile, you generally have multiple columns of data. Sometimes you need to delete some of them, as they are not needed, or unwanted, possibly from a geodatabase or any other source.

I would like to be able to delete more than one column at a time. It takes a little bit to delete one after another, and this seems like a fairly simple request.......

For the next major release of ArcGIS for Desktop, I think it would be integral if there was a GUI designer that could be used to develop custom user interfaces for python tools.  I envision this to be the next generation in python tools boxes.

The GUIs could use one of the many form designer languges like wxPython (used in the python add-ins) or Tkinter.

VBA had one good thing going for it, and that is the form designer.  I would not like the forms to be linked to the map document, but rather more like the add-in system introduced at the 10.x series.

ArcGIS should automatically record version of ArcGIS required to open LYR, MXD, or Layer package in the File properties.
    File properties

Now it's impossible to understand which version was used to create LYR, MXD, MPK, LPK file, and which version is required to open.

The map redraws all of the labels every time i move the map, print the map, or unpause labels. It pains me to think of the software going through my oodles of maplex labeling rules to decide where to place the labels, EVERY TIME! A new approach would be:

examine label rules, place labels at a set scale, save placed labels as annotation which is seamlessly attached to data source.  I don't want to see an annotation layer, save it in the MXD as long as I don't have to watch labels draw every time.  The benefit to this would be that I can move labels as I wish once placed, quickly and easily.  They are still data-linked as well.  You could have button for regenerate labels, or refresh label data, and it will go through the rules, otherwise it leaves them on the screen.

For example, A river label could be moved upstream/downstream (it follows the feature), and it will stay where it is put.  Labels can be deleted, and features can be right clicked to select "force label this feature".  This will save people hours and hours of time they shouldn't have to spend setting label rules in maplex.  Another example is that you have a point labeled, if the user wants the label farther away, the user could just click and drag the label and watch in amazement as the label grows an arrow pointing to the feature.

Why doesn't maplex have the option "place one label per feature part" like the normal engine?

Another benefit to this is that you can have more complex maplex rules and have the labels take longer to draw, since they only draw on command and are saved thereafter.

    Hi there

Currently when doing a feature class to feature class copy the archive table, containing the history of changes is not copied. All the delta tables and versions , such as the additions and deletions are copied but not archive table is not. By allowing the archive table to be copied, it would allow more robust copying of data.

I am currently working using ArcGIS 10.0.2, connecting to a geodatabase held in ArcSDE 9.3.1, with the data stored in Oracle 10g,

I am about to implement a backup which ones a day creates a duplicate copy of a database table. This would allow me to restore the data if someone accidentally deleted the table or rows of data in the table. Although Oracle is backed up, this is a quicker solution, than contacting my IT support, who do not have GIS knowledge or knowledge of ArcSDE.

However I cannot do this because the feature class to feature class copy does not copy the archive. Having spoken to ESRI (UK), they believe it will have been designed this way. I feel the design needs to be modified. If you have similar issues then please comment on my post or add your support by promoting this. The more support this gets, the greater the chance of ESRI implementing it.

If you wish to know more about archive then see this link:
    http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Geodatabase_archiving/002700000045000000/

    Kind regards

Since the geo-tagged photos are already getting generated from millions of users from their digital cameras. I would like to propose this idea.

I would like to store geo-tagged photos in a blob field of a feature class.  An import functionality to directly download the geo-tagged photos from the digital cameras or storage devices.  Features to be created using the GPS coordinates available in the photos and the the actual image data stored in the blob field.

Then while creating the cartographic symbols such as a callout symbol, I would like to display the stored photos inside the callout.

This feature will provide creation of wonderful maps with geo tagged photos present in them.

At the moment there is simply no excuse why the Topo to Raster tool used for creating a DEM is still limited to creating a DEM no greater than roughly 6500 by 6500 pixels! The memory resources are there so we should be able to use it.

The current method of getting around this problem (to mosaic DEM tiles together) creates problems in the resultant DEM let alone the amount of unnecessary time it takes to get this sort of result!

A labeling/symbology tool to easily create what we call "spider diagrams" around here would be very useful for my workflow.  These diagrams will show points on a map and then have lines connecting those points to floating data tables around the edges of the map.  Right now, we manually place the tables (embedded from Excel) and manually draw the lines connecting these tables to their corresponding points.

    The proposed tool would include:
    • Integration with the labeling engine so that tables can be smartly placed according to labeling weight restrictions
    • Draw lines connecting these tables to their corresponding points
    • Possibly generate the tables based on related tables in a Geodatabase?
      • Ex: Monitoring Point Feature Class related (1-M) to historical time series data would generate a table showing Date and Monitoring Value over a certain amount of time.
      • If not, at least generate table based off of fields in the feature class.
The same thing could go for graphs rather than tables.

Oracle allow users to create unique key constraints. This stops users from entering duplicate values.

It would be extremly helpful if ArcGIS offered something similar.

When making a connection to ArcSDE and the user has a password that is to expire in X days, the error given is "Failed to connect to database.  Bad login user."  And no connection!  The password is actually good for several more days!

Please give better feedback or even prompt the user for a password reset.

Add a function to add the number of licenses you want to be borrowed from the licese server.
when you have 20 licenses you do not want them all to be borrowed but just a small number

You can set this number in applications like Autodesk who are also using Flexlm as license manager, this can be done in the options file:

    BORROW_LOWWATER

    BORROW_LOWWATER feature[:keyword=value] n

Sets the number of licenses for a BORROW feature that cannot be borrowed.

Both of Engine Developer Kit and Engine Runtime are included in the EDN subscription. However they are only Single Use license.

I want to test the Engine Runtime Concurrent license on the  License Manager before buying actual ArcGIS Engine Runtime CU license.

ArcGIS server map server layers in Engine and ArcMap should make use of the functionality provided by the server. This would make it possible to perform the following operations on a server layer:

    1. Set a definition query in the client for a sublayer

    2. Fetch features from a sublayer as IFeature or geometries as IGeometry

    3. Make flash feature work in engine Identify tool

    4. Select features and render them as selected

Currently, ESRI does not publish pre-release Service Packs. Customers need to wait until Service Packs are released officially. Some customers have to go through the hotfix request process if the bugs are show-stopper. Pre-release Service Packs would help many customers experiencing some serious bugs without having to wait longer time for official Service Packs released and this would benefit the whole community.

Many other vendors in the hardware and software industry like Microsoft, Western Digital, etc... already publish Pre-release for users to test on testing environment. This will even help customers better who experience bugs which are addressed in a Pre-Release Service Pack.

If ArcGIS 10 supports the Service Pack un-installation feature, that would be great because customers can still uninstall the Pre-Release Service Pack and roll back to the previous released Service Pack levels.

Introduce intelligent, visually responsive user interface reflecting user movements, anticipating user requirements and visualizing interface elements relationships, thereby improving user orientation and support for more effective and flexible work.
Provide hover functionality to objects, elements and items in ArcGIS especially in TOC, Attribute Table, Data Frame and Layout. Display relationship and interdependence links between Data Frames, Groups and Layers listed in TOC, Records in Attribute Table, Features in Data/Layout View and Map elements in Layout when hovered over or selected.
Visually Interactive UI - Hover functionality
    Table Of Contents
    • On mouse hover highlight listed data frames, groups, layers, symbol labels, etc. in TOC.
    • When hovered over a group or a layer in TOC highlight corresponding features in Data/Layout View. Interactively get focus to layer’s attribute table (if opened). Highlight related item in Legend in Layout View.
    • When hovered over layer’s heading, symbol or label in TOC highlight in Data/Layout View features that fall into specified symbol or heading group definition. Simultaneously highlight records with specified symbology criteria and fields the symbology is defined by in layer’s attribute table. In Layout View highlight associated items in Legend.
    • Highlight related map elements in Layout View when hovered over a data frame in TOC (Data Frame, Legend, North, Scale, etc.).
    • Provide comprehensive and detailed pop-up description of item’s properties when hovered and remained over an item in TOC.
    Data Frame
    • Highlight feature when hovered over it in the Data Frame (Data/Layout View). Automatically highlight corresponding group, layer or symbol in TOC and corresponding record in Attribute Table (if opened; optionally set temporary focus). In Layout View highlight parent item in Legend.
    • Highlight associated layer in TOC when hovered over a layer’s label or annotation in Data/Layout View.
    • Interactively display Attributes window with attributes of features selected in the Data Frame. Hovering over selected feature in Data Frame temporarily displays selected feature's attributes in Attributes window.
    • Display detailed pop-up description of feature properties (layer, geometry, length, area, etc.) when hovered and remained over it.
    Attribute Table
    • Mouse hover over a record in Attribute Table highlights corresponding feature in the Data Frame and layer or symbol label in TOC.
    • Hovering anywhere over field or record highlights whole column or row.
    • Display detailed pop-up description when hovered and remained over a field or cell (field type, length, summary of possible/already filled characters/numbers, number format, etc.)
    • Layer’s attribute table could get a temporary focus (if opened) when the source layer is hovered over or permanent focus when the layer is selected in TOC.
    Layout
    • Hovering over a map element highlights its parent data frame in TOC and Layout. Hovering over data frame in Layout highlights associated map elements in Layout.
    • Hovering over legend’s item highlights related layer or symbology in TOC.
    • Highlight layers in TOC included in currently selected Legend in Layout View.
